The Eastway frame commemorates the legendary east-end bike track that was bulldozed in 2006 to make way for London 2012. The Cannibal himself, Eddy Merckx, described it as “the finest dedicated bike-racing circuit in Europe, if not the world.” Maybe if he’d won a couple more races people would have listened.

It’s not like the Eastway was the most beautiful place on earth – it was built on a rubbish dump in the mid 70s – but no-one gave a shit. This was about grassroots bike racing.

“When I think of the Eastway, I think of burnt out cars on bricks.” Julian Wall

When we first chatted to Phil and Jules about bringing the Eastway back, we were all into the idea of keeping every aspect of the bike British, so they teamed up with Mercian Cycles from Derby, one of the last bespoke bike builders in the UK. They’re hand building a limited edition run of 10 frames, using traditional silver soldered lugged construction, and Reynolds 653 tubing. It’s the modern equivalent of Reynolds 531c, which everyone wanted to be seen riding on the Eastway 20 years ago. The frame in the photos has a 1″ headset with an old-school quill stem.
