We shot the Black Light Baselayer on adventurer and explorer Aldo Kane who is 5ft 9 / 175cm and wears size medium.

The baselayer is incredibly stretchy so can easily fit most body types. But it’s also quite slim fitting. So if you like to get a bit of airflow between your skin and your baselayer we definitely recommend going a size up.

See our size guide for more advice on sizing.

And don’t worry if you order something and it doesn’t fit – we have a free, no-hassle 30 day return and exchange period.

Every single layer makes you highly visible at night

Any of the four pieces of our Black Light gear can be worn on their own, or as part of the Black Light layering system. The idea for the range is simple. We want to get rid of the outdated idea that you have to add on a specific layer like a high vis vest or jacket to be seen at night. So we designed a high visibility range where every layer, whether it’s a t shirt or a shell, does exactly the same amazing job of making sure you’re seen at night.

It looks completely stealth during the day

By day the baselayer is the same subtle blend of matt black hues as a Stealth Bomber. We wanted it to look cool, unobtrusive, and not like you’re wearing high vis gear at all. So everything is matt black, from the Italian materials and stitching to the black glass dots. While the reflective dots kick into life when you shine light at them at night, the rest of the time you won’t really notice them as they’re flush to the material and have a matt, rubberised finish.

How we use black glass to emit light

Most high-vis gear uses ugly thick silver reflective tapes or stripes. Ours doesn’t. We’ve custom made thousands of super-thin matt black dots that reflect light back at any source. The science behind them is simple. Each dot has over 60,000 microscopic black glass spheres embedded in its surface. You can’t see or feel the glass though. Each dot is soft, flat, flexible, completely smooth to the touch and weighs a fraction of a gram.

Reflective dots transform it at night

The baselayer remains matt black at night until light falls on it. Whether it’s car headlights, a torch or a helicopter search light, the baselayer’s 18 reflective dots transform from matt black into glowing discs of bright white light. The dots are all positioned on the parts of your body that move the most – like your elbows, wrists, shoulders and hips – so that when they light up they create a pattern that’s instantly recognisable as a person from any angle.

8 dots of light is all you need to see a person

Colour is useless in the dark as our eyes can’t see it. Instead our brain’s ‘pattern recognition system’ takes over. So we’ve designed our pattern of dots based on the science of seeing someone at night. Experimental psychologists have shown how just 8 dots of light surrounded by complete darkness are all the information our eyes and brain need to understand we’re actually looking at a person. Our brains are so good at it, that in 0.25 of a second we can predict what they’re doing, where they’re going and how fast.

Built from two of the lightest materials on earth

Built from two ultra-lightweight high-performance Italian materials, the Black Light Baselayer weighs just 95g. So it’s perfect for the hardest training or racing as it feels like it’s barely there. The back and sleeves are made from a high-wicking soft mesh fabric. It’s lightning fast to dry as you sweat, thanks to its fast-dry finish and mesh construction. The chest panel has the same high performance but we made it a fraction thicker so it doesn’t cling.

Soft and stretchy, it's the opposite of most high vis gear

We wanted to make it the exact opposite of heavy and crinkly high vis gear. So we chose materials that weren’t just extraordinarily lightweight and breathable, but also feather soft on your skin. The result is a baselayer that’s silent when you’re running in it. We’ve also used high stretch materials with 25% elastane, so every square centimetre of the shirt stretches. Every baselayer is then constructed in Portugal using a mini flatlock stitch to make all the seams smooth and flat.

Wear the system in 14 different combinations

When it comes to sport, you shouldn’t have to make a choice between over-heating and being seen. Whether you’re layering up or stripping off, the Black Light system can be worn in 14 different combinations, and gives you the same high visibility protection at all times. Whatever you’re doing, however fast you’re going, and almost whatever angle you’re seen from, we’ve designed the Black Light system so that at least 8 reflective dots will always be visible.
