We shot the Ocean Vest on kitesurfer, surfer, wakeboarder and explorer Murray Smith who is 5’9 / 175cm and wearing size medium. The vest is specifically designed to be a tight fit for the water just like a rash vest or wetsuit. So if you prefer your kit to fit a bit looser we recommend going up a size.

For more advice on sizing, check our size guide or ask us for help with sizing. And don’t worry if you order something and it doesn’t fit – we have a free, no hassle 30 day return and exchange period.

A new kind of vest for the water

The Ocean Vest sits halfway between a traditional rash vest and a neoprene vest. It combines the softness and elasticity of a rash vest with the weight and protection of a thin neoprene. The result is a vest that’s tougher than both of them and more practical at the same time. As adventures get longer and speeds out on the water get faster, your kit needs to do more. So the Ocean Vest is built to save your skin while letting you carry extra gear.

Built from compression fabric it’s crazily resilient and strong

The Ocean Vest is built from a material originally designed for compression gear, which makes it incredibly strong. We’ve simply laser-cut it into the shape of non-compression gear, so the strength of the material remains identical, but you have none of the pressure on your muscles. Every inch of fabric has been knitted by 40 needles, so unlike normal knitted fabrics it’s incredibly dense. This means that on abrasion tests, which show you how fast you could destroy something on coral reefs or rocks, it scores 5 out of 5 for toughness.

Stretches like an elastic band

Whether you’re a kitesurfer or a big wave surfer, there’s literally no move you can pull where this vest will restrict you. If you were holding a metre of this fabric, you’d be able to stretch it to 1.5 metres in any direction, and as soon as you let go it would instantly return to its normal shape thanks to the huge amount of elastane we’ve used. Stronger and more durable than rubber, the more elastane you blend with another material the stretchier it becomes. The Ocean Vest is 34% elastane, making it as stretchy as you’ll ever need.

2 streamlined laser-cut back pockets

On the back of the vest you’ll find two back pockets large enough to hold your phone, card and keys on land, or a GPS in the water. Both pockets are laser-cut and bonded on to avoid creating seams that could rub, and each have two laser cut holes with welded edges that allow water to drain at high speed rather than billowing up with air. The pockets are fastened with invisible zippers with a rubberised zip pull that’s lockable, so once it’s done up it won’t come undone.

Angled upper arm pocket

On the left upper arm you’ll find an angled pocket designed for vital stuff like keys and bank cards if you’re on the beach, or a couple of gels if paddling to another country is your favourite way to kill time. The pocket is created with the same low-profile bonding and invisible zipper as the back pockets.

A stripped-out aesthetic built with laser cutting, welding and bonding

The job of our Ocean Vest vest is to literally save your skin from rocks, sand, wind, sun, and reefs. So every design decision we made was to enhance its performance. With the neck, wrists, and pockets all cut by laser, bartacks welded on for strength, and seams bonded for simplicity, the reason it looks like a stripped-out feat of engineering is because it is.

Vegetable technology makes this rash vest water repellent

For decades, brands have been using toxic fluorocarbons to make their clothing water repellent. But ocean spray simply rolls straight off this vest without a chemical in sight. We’ve gone back to the Stone Age and used a vegetable-based technology that penetrates deep into the fibres and makes water simply slip off the surface. The same tech makes it fast-drying out of the water.

As soft as a sweater and hardwearing as a jacket

The Ocean Vest represents the holy grail of sports gear – incredibly strong, stretchy, soft and lightweight all at the same time. By blending elastane with a super tough nylon yarn, we’ve created a unique knitted fabric. With millions of microscopic knitted loops, it manages to feel as stretchy as compression gear, while being as hardwearing and smooth to the touch as a mountain shell.

The vest’s invisible tech blocks invisible UV rays

Just like sunblock, fabric can be rated for its ability to reduce your exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet light. The Ultraviolet Protection Factor, or UPF, shows how much more protection your skin would have while wearing that piece of clothing. A UPF rating of 15 for example would give your skin 15x more protection than it would have if it was unprotected. The vest scores a UPF of 50+ which is the highest possible rating, giving you the highest possible protection.

A silicon strip keeps the rash vest locked on you

On the inside of the waistband you’ll find a silicon strip that runs the entire circumference of the vest, gripping your skin or shorts, and keeping your vest secure. It works whether you’re lying on the beach or out on the water.

Designed to work with our Ocean Shorts

After launching our Ocean Shorts in 2018, we decided to build a rash vest as tough and stripped out to go with them. We used the same material as the shorts, the same design philosophy and the same construction techniques, so the two are designed to work together. Built for all 350 million square kilometres of the oceans, the Ocean Vest and Shorts looks like they were made for Bond or Seal Team Six and perform like it too.
