We shot the Orange edition of our Relaxation Hoodie on climber, surfer and snowboarder James Jagger, who is 6ft 1 / 185cm and wearing size medium.
The Relaxation Hoodie has a similar fit to our Planet Earth Hoodie but is a slimmer fit compared to our 100 Year Hoodie. If you’ve already got a 100 Year Hoodie and would like a Relaxation Hoodie with the same loose and relaxed fit, we’d recommend going up a size in the Relaxation Hoodie.

Why this is the supercar of hoodies
The reason the Relaxation Hoodies look different to regular hoodies is the same reason supercars look different to regular cars – they’re designed to perform in two totally different ways. If a standard car is built to get you from A to B efficiently, a supercar is built to get you there as fast as possible without killing you. If a standard hoodie is designed to be warm and comfortable, the Relaxation Hoodie is engineered to help you relax by lowering your heart rate and slowing down your brainwaves. It just happens to be warm and comfortable as well.
How a high-tech hoodie can help you relax
Just like a supercar the Relaxation Hoodie is all about form following function. While it’s crazily fun to wear and looks like it’s just arrived on a spaceship from another galaxy, it’s built for pure performance. It borrows from a series of experimental techniques designed to help you relax – from isolation tanks and meditation, to pink noise and colour theory – then combines them in a single hoodie.
Using colour as a mind hack
In the late 1970s psychologists already knew that the colours people liked changed depending on what mood they were in and how they felt. The next step was to see if the reverse was also true and find out whether being exposed to certain colours could change peoples’ feelings and behaviour. And more precisely, could colour be used as a mind hack and force someone’s brain into a calm and meditative state?
The day colour became a tranquilizer gun
So in the 1980s a series of experiments took place in which violent and aggressive prisoners and military personnel were thrown in jail cells with every single surface painted pink. While it must have felt like a government-funded acid trip, the results were unarguable. Being surrounded by just one colour for 15 minutes was enough to stop all angry and antagonistic behaviour. After nine minutes inmates could be found on their backs simply staring at the ceiling. With the effects lasting a further half hour after leaving the cell, they may as well have been shot with a tranquilizer gun.
The black visor makes day feel like night to chill you out
While the visors of our original Relaxation Hoodie turn the entire world the exact same colour the inmates saw, after running our own experiments we began to build a series of black visor editions. The black see-through visor makes the hoodie feel more like an isolation tank. It helps turn day into night even in the brightest environments. It retains body heat more effectively. And it looks like a supercar.
You can see out, but no-one can see in
The black visor is made from a soft and breathable mesh fabric that allows you to see out, but no-one to see in. This shot was taken from the inside to show you how much visibility you’ll have when it’s zipped up. You’ll still be able to ride the chairlift, cook some food in your tent, kick back and watch TV, or flick through messages before your flight. But unless you have crazy skills you might want to avoid the high-speed stuff like off-piste descents.
It’s amazing on flights
Zipping the hoodie up is like hanging up a Do Not Disturb sign. Bright lights disappear. Everything gets quieter. And people leave you alone. Which makes it the most amazing hoodie for any kind of travelling. The hoodie is made from insulated fabric which is perfect for the random temperature changes you get on planes. So on your next flight, just zip it up, switch off, and stay in your own bubble.
The first piece of clothing to come with its own soundtrack
The Relaxation Hoodie comes with its own downloadable soundtrack designed to induce the same brainwaves you experience in meditation. Constructed almost entirely from calming ‘pink noise’ it contains every frequency the human ear can hear. You find pink noise almost everywhere in nature, from crashing waves to wind blowing through the trees and rain hitting the ground. Inside the hoodie you’ll find a zipped internal phone pocket and headphones loops.
The hoodie is like a portable isolation tank
In 1954 the neuroscientist JC Lilly invented the isolation tank while working at the National Institute for Mental Health. Floating in a dark, soundproof tank of warm salt water was designed with the sole aim of isolating the brain from external stimulation. It’s a brilliant invention until you realise you can’t take it to any of the places you might need to relax – on the side of a cliff or before you’re about to jump out of a plane. The Relaxation Hoodie cut out stimulus like an isolation tank, but you can fold it up in your bag and wear it like a regular hoodie.
Even the pockets are designed to help you relax
You’ll find two large pockets on the front of the hoodie, with the left pocket much higher than the right one. They’re designed to hold your arms comfortably in a folded position even if you’re fast asleep, so it’s comforting and just like giving yourself a hug. Both pockets stretch right around to your back so you can slide your arms right in. Of course they also work as regular zipped pockets for phone or keys and come with waterproof neoprene zips.
The hoodie is soft and cushioned to help you chill out anywhere
The hoodie helps you relax even in the harshest environments. With the cushioned feel of a neoprene wetsuit, you could lie down on a hard rock ledge and still be comfortable. The surface of the fabric is water repellent, and all zips are waterproofed so light rain simply rolls off. It’s insulated which makes it great for keeping out the wind whether you’re up in the mountains or in the city. And the fabric is breathable and stretchy so you’ll never feel restricted.
It can warm you up like a sleeping bag
You can’t relax if you’re cold and shivering, so whether you’ve spent too long in the ocean or you’ve woken up frozen at first light in the Arctic, encasing yourself in the hoodie will warm you up at high speed. Zipping the hoodie up when you’re freezing is like zipping a sleeping bag over your head. Instead of wasting the warm air you breathe out, it will simply circulate around you. Stick your arms in the pockets at the same time and you’ll be giving yourself a doubly insulated hug to stay warm.
Watch Jon Glaser and Jimmy Fallon demo the pink edition on The Tonight Show
There are three things we know are true for pretty much everyone who owns a Relaxation Hoodie. First, you’ll go through the ‘who can I freak out’ comedy stage. Second is the ‘holy shit’ moment when you first lie down in it with your feet up and genuinely let yourself relax. Third is you’ll be asked what the hell it is, and where you got it, a lot. So if you’re looking for pro tips on what to say, here’s gear junkie, runner and comedian Jon Glaser educating Jimmy Fallon on the art of wearing a Relaxation Hoodie on The Tonight Show.
It's no secret that certain colors can cause your body to do certain things. The Vollebak Baker Miller Relaxation Hoodie takes this knowledge and uses it to hack your own body.
Who would’ve thought that your average looking apparel would also help you relax. Vollebak’s latest Baker Miller hoodie aims to do just that with a sweatshirt that aims to calm players before a big event. Comparable to a tent that you can take with you, its zipper goes all the way up in order to cover your face and also filters what you see using calming colors.
Sweatpants are alright, but hoodies are the undisputed champion of comfort clothing. Not only are they soft; their hood is like an emergency privacy shield for those moments that you just can’t. Which is what makes the Baker Miller Hoodie by Vollebak so appealing. It’s not just your standard heaven-sent sweatshirt with a zipper; it’s a hoodie that’s designed to calm you down, like a wearable tent.
