The core technology that enables the Solar Charged Jacket to glow is its waterproof membrane. Engineered with a phosphorescent compound that rapidly absorbs and stores light, the membrane then re-releases that light slowly as day turns to night. We filmed the jacket over 24 hours so you can see the technology at work.

Instead of heading to the Sahara or Gobi desert, which felt like cheating, we took it to a British forest with horses, streams, flies, and as much shade as there was sun. We shot the film ourselves in 24 hours using a camera that’s really accurate in low light conditions. We hung the jacket from a branch with an Ikea clothes hanger because it was the easiest thing to do, and it makes the charging process really easy to see. And other than us speeding the footage up occasionally, there are no special effects. The colours you see are as they were.

Since launch the Solar Charged Jacket has been named WIRED Gear of the Year and one of TIME’s Best Inventions.
