Made from a highly responsive material that can be charged and made to glow by exposing it to almost any light source, the Solar Charged Jacket is the most technologically advanced jacket in the world, and was named Gear of the Year 2017 by WIRED. With just a couple of hours’ charge out in daylight it can still be glowing up to 12 hours later. And there are no batteries or electronics involved. The core technology that enables the jacket to glow is its waterproof membrane. Engineered with a phosphorescent compound that rapidly absorbs and stores light, the membrane then re-releases that light slowly as day turns to night.
This was not a fancy shoot. We shot the whole film ourselves in the same 24 hour period and using just one camera – a Sony Alpha 7R II which is exceptionally accurate in low light conditions. We hung it from a branch with an Ikea clothes hanger because it was the easiest thing to do, and it makes the charging process really easy to see. And other than us speeding the footage up occasionally, there are no special effects. The colours you see are as they were.
