As floods and fires sweep across entire countries, we’re radically underprepared as a species for the speed at which change is taking place. But while we’re entering a new normality, we’re not about to suddenly evolve the ability to resist fire or live back in the oceans. So our survival systems need to adapt – from emergency planning and infrastructure, to our architecture and clothing. Of all of these clothing is going to be the fastest.

Designed for an unpredictable world

It used to be just adventurers or the elite military who would be exposed to perpetual threat. But as risk becomes more commonplace, the clothes on your back need to do more. They still need to be soft, comfortable and warm, but they should be designed with extreme performance capabilities. So all our 100 Year gear is made from materials with properties that normal clothing simply doesn’t have. They’re built to be resistant to fire, wind, water, and time.

The hoodie is made from three layers sandwiched together

If you looked at a cross section of this hoodie, you'd think you’re just looking at a single layer of fabric. But just as you’d find with any high-performance jacket, it’s actually three separate layers sandwiched together and performing three distinct roles. The outer layer is a stretchy, fireproof and windproof softshell. The middle layer is a waterproof membrane. And the bottom layer next to your skin is a soft, engineered fleece that keeps you warm, dry and comfortable.

The outside layer works like a fireproof jacket

Even on its own the outer layer of the hoodie would be one of the toughest pieces of clothing you’d ever worn. Highly durable and abrasion resistant, it’s also water repellent, stretchy and fireproof. Yet despite this it doesn’t feel like any fire-resistant fabric that’s ever been made before. And that’s because it’s the two layers beneath it help turn it into a hoodie comfortable enough to spend the rest of your life in.

The middle layer keeps out rain and wind

Hoodies don’t normally come with membranes. You usually only find them in high performance outdoor jackets. But this is a 100 Year Hoodie, so it has one. And just like any good ski jacket or running jacket, the membrane is there to keep the rain and wind out, while letting excess heat and sweat escape easily.

An engineered fleece sits next to your skin

The inside of the hoodie is made from an engineered fleece. And it’s this inner layer that provides the warmth and comfort you want from any great hoodie. The fleece is built with a grid structure which creates thousands of tiny air channels. These are designed to increase breathability and trap warmth, while subtly decreasing the mass and weight of the hoodie. The fleece is also hydrophilic, so it rapidly absorbs sweat and transfers it to the outside of the hoodie.

Built with Polartec technologies

As well as being synonymous with outdoor gear, for the last decade Polartec have been developing flame resistant fabrics for the US military after their uniforms began melting in the intense heat of IED detonations. They work with military partners to develop combat-ready layering systems that protect soldiers from sudden heat sources in hostile territories. Our aim was to let anyone benefit from this technology. So we worked with Polartec to rebuild our 100 Year Hoodie from scratch.

How it fights sudden fire

The material the 100 Year Hoodie is built from is designed to protect you in the most dangerous situations, from flash fires to arc flash. A flash fire is a sudden, intense fire that combines high temperatures and short duration with a rapidly moving flame front. An arc flash is a type of extreme electrical explosion that’s capable of generating temperatures of 19,400°C, which is four times hotter than the surface of the sun and can burn skin and set clothes on fire even at a distance.

This hoodie will outperform most jackets

All our 100 Year gear is made with materials that have the kind of properties normal materials simply don’t have, and the 100 Year Hoodie is no different. Built for the harshest environments on Earth – places where the weather can stop you dead if it decides to – it’s the most weatherproof hoodie we’ve ever made. Hoodies are not normally known for toughness, waterproofness, or breathability. But the 100 Year Hoodie combines such high levels of all three, that it will beat most jackets.

With a full-length zip you can wear it as your jacket

The idea for the 100 Year Hoodie was always to make it look and feel like any other hoodie in your wardrobe. So it’s designed to have a loose relaxed feel. And the inside of the hoodie is a warm, cushioned fleece. But at the same time it’s infinitely tougher. So the full-length zip is rubberised and waterproof. The durable draw cords are more like rope in their texture and thickness, and are finished with heat-moulded rubberised ends. And the material started life in a warzone.

Equipped with four large zipped pockets

The hoodie has four large, super-practical front pockets for carrying extra gear. Large, two-way zippers connect the top and bottom pockets on each side so you can open and close the four pockets in any combination you want. If you want to keep the two higher pockets for keys, phone and kit, and the lower pockets free for your hands, you can. The zippers are all rubberised and waterproof.

Our 100 Year gear has always been built to be highly resistant to things like fire, time, water and abrasion. The origins of the 100 Year Hoodie

In 2017 we built our first ever 100 Year Hoodie from the same materials found in spacesuits and body armour. Keeping up with demand was impossible and it was gone in a week. For Version 2 we added the full-length zip and giant pockets you see today. But over the last two years we’ve been back in R&D working on Version 3, solving the final challenge – building a hoodie capable of combating every element on Earth. While it’s always been fire and abrasion resistant, we’ve now made it weatherproof too, to protect you against snow, wind, rain and cold.

A hardcore hood built for the elements

The 100 Year Hoodie is built to take on the elements, so when the weather turns against you, just pull the hood tight around your face and the hoodie will hold its position. Where a normal cotton hoodie will simply lose tension, the strength of the rope-like cords and hoodie material are designed to help you stay protected.

What you wear over the world’s toughest hoodie

If you’re off on a mission to the end of the world you can always wear the world’s toughest puffer over the world’s toughest hoodie. At the end of 2019, we took the puffer jacket – traditionally one of the weakest and most delicate pieces of clothing you can buy – and rebuilt it from the strongest fibre ever made. Every fibre on the outside of the jacket is up to 15x stronger than steel, so even if you were wearing a steel-plated jacket that was the same weight, our Indestructible Puffer would be 15x stronger.
