Fit guide: The Ceramic Hoodie is a slim-fitting technical hoodie. If you’re on the borderline between two sizes, or would like a more relaxed fit as shown in the photos, we recommend going a size up.

Model wears: Surfer Nuno Marques is 6ft 2 / 188cm with a 38.5in / 98cm chest and 32in / 81cm waist. As the Ceramic Hoodie is slim fitting, Nuno wears the hoodie in size Large to get a more relaxed fit.

Why we’re building clothing with ceramics

Making the world’s most resilient and intelligent clothing means we often end up re-engineering materials that started life being used for radically different things. We’ve created t shirts using carbon fibre and algae. We’ve made jackets using graphene, glass, and bioluminescent material, and built hoodies and pants from fibres that can’t be set on fire. As ceramics have been used in some of the most hardcore engineering on Earth, we decided to use it to start building the most hardcore clothing.

Built with the same ceramic tech as the International Space Station

To get a sense of just how tough ceramic materials can be, you need to look to the International Space Station 400km above the Earth. It has multiple layers of protection shielding it from micrometeoroids and orbital debris that can strike at speeds of up to 40,000mph. The first is made from aramid fibre – the same as our 100 Year Hoodies. The next is woven from ceramic fibre – the second toughest material on or off the planet. And if it’s good enough for hypervelocity collisions in space, it’s good enough for any mission back on Earth.

Hardcore ceramic protection

Each Ceramic Hoodie is made with an innovative ceramic coating technology developed in Switzerland. The entire surface of the hoodie is covered in 60,000 tessellating matt black ceramic particles that are embedded into the material. This coating is soft to the touch and can’t be scratched off or washed out. But while every ceramic element is smooth, flat and thinner than a human hair, the only material on earth that’s tougher than ceramics is diamonds, and this is what makes the hoodie so highly abrasion resistant.

Why abrasion resistance matters

Abrasion resistance is how you measure clothes’ ability to withstand friction and wear and tear. Whether you're lugging climbing rope over your shoulder, you come off your bike on a downhill track, or your bag's shifting up and down on your back on a long run, that’s all abrasion. Wearing highly abrasion resistant clothing gives you the best chance of coming home from an adventure with your clothes and your skin intact.

Inspired by the world’s toughest t shirt

In 2017 we used the same ceramic technology to create the toughest t shirt on Earth. Since then our Ceramic T Shirt has been taken into jungles, warzones and live volcanoes, and become our highest ever selling piece of kit. It’s built to perform whether you’re off-road running or biking, competing in a multi-stage endurance race, hacking through undergrowth, or pulling a sled in the Arctic. The hoodie has the same performance capabilities but comes with water-repellent side pockets, rubberised zip pullers, and a drawcord hood to protect your head.

Part of the toughest clothing system on Earth

We designed our Ceramic Hoodie, Ceramic T Shirt and Ceramic Baselayer to be the toughest layering system on the planet. Depending on the terrain and temperature you find yourself in they can be worn separately, two at a time, or all three together. All three pieces use the same ceramic coating technology and have the same fitted cut. The tighter fit means that they can be worn close to your body to offer you the most protection.

Designed to keep you warm and dry

The Ceramic Hoodie is the warmest and thickest of the three ceramic layers and comes with a soft brushed fleece underside. The material is heat retaining so that you don’t start rapidly cooling the minute you stop moving. It’s also breathable and hydrophilic, which means it will soak up any sweat and get rid of it fast, so you stay comfortable and dry.

It’s crazily stretchy as well as tough

It’s normally difficult to make something very tough and stretchy at the same time, but the ceramic technology lets us combine toughness with the properties of an elastic band. The more elastane you have in a piece of clothing the more it can stretch. And the last thing you want when you’re pulling any extreme or repetitive move is resistance from your kit. The Ceramic Hoodie has 4 way stretch as it’s built with 15% elastane, so whichever way you stretch, pull or turn, it will simply go with you.

Adventure sport is never predictable, so we've created a hoodie that protects you from every angle, rather than second-guessing where you might need it. The entire surface area of the hoodie is abrasion resistant. Every square centimetre has ceramics running through it. Which means it doesn’t matter where a rock, a tree, or the passage of time tries to strike, you should be covered.

Built in the SpaceX of fabric mills

Every Ceramic T Shirt, Baselayer and Hoodie starts life at the same space age factory in Switzerland. Based in the mountains, Schoeller is to material technology what SpaceX is to rockets – a bunch of people and machines quietly making the future happen faster. While ceramic technology has been used on missile nose cones and the blades of jet engines for decades, Schoeller helped us become the first to apply ceramics to a wearable system of clothing.
