We started with a material that can work anywhere on Earth.

To build a hoodie that can work anywhere on Earth you need to start with an exceptional material. We built our fabric from scratch in Italy, knitting two of the softest substances in the world together to build a new material. On the outside of the hoodie we used an ultra-fine Australian Merino, and on the inside we used a brushed fleece that’s even softer still. Together they create a single material that will keep you warm in the cold, cool you in the heat, and stretch with you in any direction.

What makes Merino so exceptional

We experiment with some of the most advanced materials on Earth, but sometimes billions of years of evolution has done the job for you. Merino sheep are bred to survive scorching summers and freezing winters, so their fleece has evolved to help them stay cool in temperatures of over 30°C, while staying warm in -10°C. So when you wear Merino fibres they respond and adapt to the conditions you find yourself in – either trapping or releasing heat depending on the temperature and humidity of your skin.

You can wear it from the Arctic to the office

As the finest and softest wool available, Merino can be worn anywhere for almost anything. Which means the Planet Earth Hoodie adapts to life in the city as easily as it thrives in the mountains. Lightweight and breathable, you can wear it with the hood and collar down like a regular lightweight hoodie. But you’ll know you can still be ready for somewhere a little more hostile in a second.

The hood and collar can be worn in 4 ways

The Planet Earth Hoodie is engineered to work in the same way as the Merino fleece it's made from – it lets you adapt at high speed to your surroundings. Whether you’re in the Arctic, the desert, or the city, there are times when you’ll need to protect your face and head from the heat, the cold and the weather. So we built an integrated hood and collar that can be worn in four configurations and be switched rapidly from one to the other.

The Merino visor is hinged so you can adapt to any conditions

Whether it’s NASA space helmets, explorers’ balaclavas, or knights’ visors, protecting your face and head has always been high up the list of priorities for people on a mission. We turned to the history of engineering to design a hinged Merino visor that could protect you in almost any conditions. It doesn’t matter whether it’s dust storms, blizzards, midges, the cold or the heat, the design of the hood and collar can help you cope anywhere on the planet.

Built for the mountains and poles

The collar and hood are built so that they can operate entirely independently – this means you can wear them both up, both down, or just one up. On the slopes or in the mountains you’ll probably want the full balaclava effect, with both the hood and collar up. Together they’ll just leave your eyes exposed and enough space for ski goggles.

The collar has 8 laser-cut and welded vents

The high collar is built for speed and practicality. You’ll find 8 laser-cut and welded breathing holes over your mouth, and a pull tab on the rim of the collar for pulling it up and down. The inner fleece is soft on your face and fast drying. The collar is highly elastic to fit different face shapes and can be worn up on its own, so the second you want your mouth and nose protected, you can whip it up over your face.

How Merino keeps you warm in the cold

Staying warm is all about trapping as many pockets of air next to your body as possible and that’s what Merino is built for. Every Merino fibre is hollow which means you’ll automatically have millions of air pockets trapped next to your skin. And as the natural curl of wool fibres traps more air than straight fibres, the microscopic texture of the fabric itself will also retain heat.

You can layer up over the hoodie or beneath it

The hoodie’s engineering comes into its own in cold terrain. It’s so soft, stretchy and high wicking that you can wear it as your first layer to prevent the build-up of sweat that can rapidly chill you. It can also be worn as part of a layering system under your jacket on the slopes. Or if you’re looking to go fast and light, you can wear it on its own. The hood and collar will work together like a balaclava to keep you warm when the weather changes.

Fast drying and insulating even when wet

The outside of every Merino fibre is covered in a natural wax coating which makes it water repellent when you’re outside. At the same time the Merino and brushed fleece on the inside of the hoodie act like a sponge to soak up sweat and spread it over a massive surface area so that it evaporates at high speed. And as Merino can absorb over 30% of its own weight in water and still feel dry, you’ll stay warm and insulated.

Merino keeps you cool in the heat

Merino stops you overheating in higher temperatures as it simply releases its warmth if you’re getting too hot. Merino wool has to keep sheep cool even when the temperature goes over 30°C, so the merino fibre naturally absorbs the moisture from sweat and disperses it to start releasing heat.

There’s almost nothing it can’t cope with

Both the Merino fibres and the fleece are highly elastic which means the Planet Earth Hoodie will stretch with you whatever you’re doing. They can also be pulled with a lot of sudden force without breaking and still return to their original shape. As they’re lightweight and breathable you’ll find there’s almost nothing you can’t use the hoodie for throughout the year – from snowboarding and skiing to running and climbing. It holds its warmth and dries quickly.

It’s hard to make a Planet Earth Hoodie smell

It’s not sweat that smells, or even the clothes themselves, it’s the build-up of bacteria on the surface of the clothes. Merino is naturally odour resistant – odour molecules are absorbed and locked into the centre of the fibre of the Merino so you simply can’t smell them. They’re then released when you wash the hoodie.

merino hoodie grey pocket 1376

A single back pocket built for practicality

The hoodie is designed to work on its own when you want to move fast and light. So behind the right hip you’ll find a concealed zipped pocket designed to hold just your phone, keys, card and no more. Your phone slides in to fill almost the whole pocket which means it won’t jump up and down when you’re out running or out on the slopes.

merino hoodie grey thumbs 1376

Concealed thumb holes at either wrist

It’s small things that make a big difference when you’re out in the cold. So instead of open thumb holes that let the wind in, the Planet Earth Hoodie has two concealed slits at either wrist. When your thumb is not through them, you won’t even notice they’re there. The fabric doubles up over the opening so that when you’re not using it there’s no gap.

How we created an ultra-soft hoodie

The harsher the conditions you’re in, the more important comfortable clothes become. The aim behind the Planet Earth Hoodie was to create the most comfortable hoodie you’ve ever worn. So against your skin you’ll find a brushed fleece, that’s as soft as anything you’ll find in nature. To brush the fleece we take the roll of fabric before it’s been cut, and wind it repeatedly over a giant cylinder with thousands of tiny spikes that mash it like a cat’s claws – softening the fabric until it feels like cotton wool.

Why our Merino wool comes from Australia

Flocks of Merino sheep have been kept for their wool ever since the 12th century. Bred by the Spanish royal family they were so highly prized that taking one out of the country would have you killed. And when the first 26 sheep from the royal flock sailed to Australia in 1797, even the ship’s crew gave up their cabins so the sheep could have them. While half the sheep died on the crossing, the rest became the start of a breeding line that would go on to dominate modern Merino production.

How we source our wool responsibly

While Merino is an amazing material it has to be made ethically and in the right way. Our Merino is all certified by the Responsible Wool Standard, an independent body in Australia set up for farms committed to protecting the welfare of their sheep as well as the land they graze on. It means we can trace the journey of the Merino from these farms in Australia, to the spinning of the yarn in Italy, through to production of the hoodies in Portugal. The fabric is also Blue Sign approved, which means it was made with minimal impact on the environment.
